Ep. 1: In the Classroom, Choice is Everything

Collaborative Teaching Episode 1 - In the Classroom, Choice is Everything.jpg

Our goal as teachers is to help students become competent, life-long learners. The only way to acheive this is to trust our students to own their learning. This is why giving students choices in their learning is of the utmost importance.

Every teacher dreams of their students growing up, getting out of school, being competent, capable adults who are able to make good choices for themselves, who are able to research problems, problem solve, think critically and know what to do out there in the real world.Β

From the Episode

Don't we want life-long readers? People that know what genres speak to them? What stories speak to their heart? How are they ever going to figure that out if all we do is teach books whole class?

I don't know about you, but I do not want to read 150 essays on the same topic. It is incredibly mind-numbing...Oh, it's so boring. So boring.

Giving students choice in the classroom does more than just enrich your classroom life, it enriches their life.
